This Year, Make The Christmas Gifts Yourself!

So, it’s Christmas again.

The best time of the year, in my opinion. The air feels cheerful, the days seem a little brighter, and people just look happier. The streets start to shine and the stores get busier as everyone rushes to buy presents. And the Christmas trees… This year I went to the Capitale de Noël - Strasbourg - to visit Les Marchés (the Christmas Market). In Place Kléber they had the most beautiful Christmas tree I have ever seen. It's certainly a must visit!
And I love decorating mine, even though I’m pretty picky about how it looks (I’m basically Monica from Friends!). My tree has to be perfect.

But one of the best parts of Christmas is showing love to the people closest to you. And what better way to do that than by giving them a thoughtful present chosen just for them?
And I personally believe a gift becomes even more special when you make it yourself!

So today I’m here to tell you about the gifts I made for my loved ones, and how heartwarming it felt to see that, years later, my grandma still keeps hers.

The first thing we need to do before DIYing a present is deciding what we’re going to make, right? Not gonna lie, my creative light bulb doesn’t always spark on its own. I often need to grab a little inspiration from Pinterest. Even so, one thing that always helps is thinking about what the other person truly values.

For example, I have a friend who absolutely loves reading. So for her present, I’d make a must-have reader’s kit with a custom bookmark, a “favorite quotes” notebook, some highlighters, a crochet book cover to protect her reads, and of course… a new book for her to enjoy.

I did something similar for my grandma. She lives for cooking. She loves it - she could spend an entire day in the kitchen trying new recipes without a problem!
So, a few years ago, I decorated a jam jar with a snowflake I made using hot glue (I used a blue glitter glue stick - highly recommend) and filled it with homemade cookies. Not only did I bake something special for her, but I also knew the jar would be super useful in her kitchen. And I was right! A few days ago I noticed she still has it on her counter, filled with goodies. It might seem like a small thing, but it meant a lot to me that she kept it after all this time.

This year, I made another present for her in honor of her passion. And I actually filmed a video to show you how I did it, but that post isn’t out yet, so no spoilers… it’s coming soon!

I’ve always loved creating gifts for my friends too, and I would often make “birthday boxes” filled with memories and little surprises. That’s one of the ideas I once stole from Pinterest. You can create a birthday box in countless ways, but what I usually did was decorate it with ribbons, pearls, drawings and a fake cardboard cake, and then fill it with our photos in different formats - like a mini photo carousel, a tiny “camera” made out of a matchbox with photos inside, and so on.
Then I’d add their favorite sweets to finish everything off. And they loved it. It was so personal. When I see the boxes I made for them displayed in their bedrooms, it genuinely makes me so happy. It’s always worth the effort.

But of course, not everyone feels confident crafting something from scratch — and that’s totally okay! A meaningful gift doesn’t have to be handmade in a literal “arts-and-crafts” way. Sometimes the most thoughtful presents are the ones that create memories instead of objects.

If you’re not very crafty (or even if you are, but want to try something different), you can create experiences instead of things. For example:

  • Prepare a “movie night kit” with popcorn, a cozy blanket and a handwritten list of films to watch together;
  • Plan a little adventure day. Maybe a picnic, a visit to a Christmas market, or a simple walk somewhere meaningful;
  • Make a personalized playlist with songs that remind you of that person, and pair it with a cute note explaining why;
  • Create “coupons” for things like baking together, a home spa evening, helping them study, cooking their favorite meal… anything that feels like you.

These gifts may not sit on a shelf, but they stay in the heart and that’s what really matters.

At the end of the day, Christmas gifting isn’t about perfection or about making something extravagant. It’s about intention. It’s about taking a moment to think of someone you love and saying: “Hey, I made this for you. You matter to me.”

Whether you craft a whole birthday box, decorate a jar, cook something sweet, or plan a simple experience you can share together… the magic is the same.

So this year, try gifting something with a little extra love in it, made by your hands, your time and your heart. I promise it feels just as amazing to give as it does to receive.

I wish you the happiest Christmas!

See you next time! Ladybug out!
