DIY Mini Post-it Cover

I love post-its. They’re lifesavers for my forever-daydreaming brain, helping me remember what I actually need to do. I’ve always loved bringing colorful post-its to school, but there was one tiny problem: they would get lost in my backpack and end up bent and/or dirty.

One day, I decided to fix that by making a little cover to store them — A5 size, with a small pocket for my custom hot-glue paper clips! It was such a hit at school that my friends even started asking me to make one for them too!

Today, I’m going to show you how to make a mini version of that beloved cover. Let’s go!

Watch the video tutorial here

You’ll need:

  • Cardboard
  • Fabric, EVA foam, felt, or any other material to cover it
  • A cute button for the closure
  • Masking tape
  • Elastic cord
  • White glue
  • Post-its (obviously!)
  • Cardstock for the inside lining
  • Hot glue

1. Cut the cardboard to size

To figure out the size, I arranged my post-its in the order I wanted and took measurements. Mine ended up with 12 x 8 cm covers and a 1.5 cm spine. From the cardboard, I cut:

  • 4 rectangles of 12 x 8 cm
  • 2 rectangles of 12 x 1.5 cm

I cut everything twice because my cardboard was thin, but if yours is sturdy, you only need one set. I glued the pieces together in pairs with white glue and placed a weight on top to dry.

2. Assemble the cover

To make the “hinges,” I used masking tape. First, I taped the edges of each piece for a cleaner finish. Then, I joined the pieces where the cover would fold, leaving a small gap so they could bend easily. I tested the folds before moving on to decoration. If you find it hard to fold your cover, try leaving more space between the pieces — but if the folds feel too loose, bring the pieces closer together.

3. Time to cover it!

The fun part! You can paint it, cover it with felt, EVA, fabric — whatever you like. I used a cute lemon-print fabric (perfect for summer) and mint green cardstock for the inside, to match the theme.

I cut the fabric with about 2 cm of extra on all sides, and the cardstock 0.5 cm smaller than the cover. Using a brush, I applied white glue all over the outside, making sure to cover the corners and folds well. Then I slowly glued the fabric, stretching it to avoid wrinkles.

For the folds, I used a ruler to push the fabric inside. I cut the corners at a 45° angle, leaving about 0.5 cm of space between the cut and the edge of the cardboard to fully cover it. I glued the flaps inward, pressing with the ruler along the folds.

Then I glued the cardstock inside, using the same technique of the ruler, and placed a weight on top until it dried.

4. Attach the post-its & make the closure

I glued the post-its with white glue in the arrangement I had planned. For the closure, I hot-glued a piece of elastic to the back cover, making sure it was long enough to reach the front without being too loose, and then covered the seam with a piece of fabric. Then I glued the button with a generous drop of hot glue, leaving it slightly raised so the elastic could loop around it.

And there you have it! Your cover is ready! You can make it in any size to hold as many post-its as you like, and even add a little pocket (like I did on my original version, with matching felt and fabric).

This DIY was super nostalgic for me, and I'm super happy that I got to share it with you.
